What to Expect on Service Day: Preparing for Your Exterior Cleaning
A little preparation before your exterior cleaning appointment helps everything go smoothly. Here’s what to do before I arrive and what you can expect while I’m working.

A little preparation before an exterior cleaning appointment helps the job go smoothly and lets me spend more time cleaning and less time moving things around your property.
Here’s what I ask customers to do before I arrive—and what you can expect while I’m working.
Before I arrive
If possible, please take a few minutes to prepare the areas being cleaned:
- Make sure all windows and exterior doors are completely closed.
- Move vehicles away from the work area, especially if the driveway or nearby concrete is being cleaned.
- Remove or secure fragile items such as decorations, small planters, cushions, flags, and anything else that could be damaged by water or moved by a hose.
- Move patio furniture, grills, toys, and other items away from surfaces being cleaned when practical.
- Unlock gates so I can access the areas included in your service.
- Keep pets inside or in a secure area while the work is being performed.
- Make sure an exterior water source is accessible. If there is anything unusual about your water access, just let me know beforehand.
If your property has any areas I should know about—such as a leaking window, loose siding, damaged wood, an electrical issue, a delicate plant, or another concern—please point it out before work begins.
When I arrive
Before getting started, I’ll look over the property and the areas scheduled for cleaning. If I notice anything that could affect the work, I’ll discuss it with you before proceeding.
I’ll then set up the equipment, hoses, and cleaning area.
Depending on the service, I may use a combination of low-pressure soft washing and professional pressure-cleaning equipment. Different surfaces require different methods, and I’ll use the approach appropriate for the material being cleaned.
Property photos and observations
Before or during the cleaning process, you may see me taking photos of certain areas around your property.
These photos help document the condition of the surfaces before work begins, but they also give me an opportunity to point out anything I notice that may deserve your attention—such as loose siding, damaged trim, failing paint, cracks, staining, deterioration, or other visible concerns.
If I notice something that could become a larger issue, I’ll be happy to show you what I found and share the photos with you.
In some cases, catching a small problem early may give you the opportunity to address it before it becomes a more expensive repair.
My goal is not just to clean the property, but to be observant while I’m there and make you aware of anything I see that may be helpful to know about.
While I’m working
Exterior cleaning involves hoses, wet surfaces, equipment, and cleaning solutions, so I ask that children and pets stay clear of the work area until the job is finished.
You may notice:
- Hoses running around portions of the property.
- Cleaning solution being applied before surfaces are rinsed.
- Landscaping being rinsed before, during, or after cleaning as appropriate.
- Some areas temporarily becoming wet or slippery.
- Normal operating noise from the pressure-washing equipment.
You generally do not need to be outside while I work.
In many cases, you do not need to remain home as long as I have access to everything needed to complete the service and a way to reach you if necessary.
What results should you expect?
The goal is always to make a noticeable improvement while cleaning your property safely.
Organic growth such as algae, mildew, and general exterior buildup often responds very well to professional cleaning.
However, cleaning cannot always correct permanent discoloration, oxidation, failing paint, damaged surfaces, rust, oil stains, or other conditions that may require a separate treatment or repair.
If I find something during the job that falls outside the normal cleaning process, I’ll let you know rather than simply trying a more aggressive method that could damage the surface.
A simple process
My goal with every Patella Exteriors appointment is simple: show up prepared, protect the property, use the right cleaning method for each surface, and leave the area cleaner than I found it.
A few minutes of preparation before I arrive helps make that process easier for everyone.
If you have a question about preparing for an upcoming service, contact Patella Exteriors before your appointment. I’d rather answer the question ahead of time than have you wondering what needs to be done.
